Mike Lewis, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon explains how donations made in 2018 are saving lives in the fight against Coronavirus
Our Charity Golf Day is an annual event open to clients and contacts of Hurley Partners. Through it we raise substantial funds for the Hurley Partners Charitable Trust which forwards significant donations to chosen medical charities.
In 2018 the event raised over £43,000 of which £20,000 was donated to The Sussex Heart Charity to help with the funding of an ECMO machine. Read below the heartwarming comments of Mr Michael Lewis regarding the machine and how it is at the front line of saving lives as a result of Covid-19. Once again thank you to all who donated so generously.
I hope you and yours remain well.
I am writing to you to update you with how you and everybody at Hurley Partners’ Charitable Trust have helped to save lives during the Coronavirus outbreak. Your kind support has meant that we have finally been able to obtain our ECMO machine.
You have probably seen on the news that ECMO has been a really important treatment for young patients who have severe lung failure as a consequence of this horrible disease.
When we came to talk to you we asked for your support to allow us to provide something called VA ECMO which is useful when the heart has stopped working. Patients with COVID whose lungs have stopped working need a slightly different treatment called VV ECMO. This is something we do not have a lot of experience of, in Brighton. It uses the same machine, however.
We have therefore loaned our machine and some of our support team (called perfusionists) to St Thomas’ Hospital, our local centre for VV ECMO where it and they are already in action saving lives.
You should all be immensely proud of what you have helped achieve.
I’ll come back to you with more info when things start to settle but thought I would send you an email from the front line, so to speak, so that you can all know what a big difference you have made.
With best wishes and thank you so much, once again.
